redundancy 3
Redundancy: Pleonasm Or Tautology (When Good Writing Turns Bad) I have engaged in a number of proofreads and edits in the recent weeks and apart from clichés, passive voice, typos and grammatical issues such as pronoun, comma and apostrophe, semi colon/colon misuse, the most common correction is the not-so-known redundancy. How do I know redundancy is not-so-known? Because the author says so. With a hint of surprise, maybe disappointment, they say, “Really? Never heard of it.” What Is Redundancy? Redundancy (in writing terminology) is the adding of words or phrases that add nothing to the overall text meaning because their gist has already been expressed. A a redundancy exhibits through: Pleonasm (Greek word that means excess) using more words than necessary and one or more words are redundant because the meaning is implicit. For example, I saw with my own eyes.  Tautology (Greek word tauto (the same) and logos (a word or an idea) a repetition...

Random Act Of Kindness Another Random Act Of Kindness – in the most unusual way – ah they come in many guises. Fresh from my swim, I stood at the traffic lights when 2 young males zoomed in on skateboards. One had a spray bottle in his hand. The sun was hot and the lights took their time. Male number 1 with spray bottle in hand reached across, sprayed male number 2 in the face, and then proceeded to spray his face. Deborah, “That’s an interesting concept, what a great idea.” Male number 1 smiled. Then reached across and sprayed my face and back. That was it; no dialogue just a delightful mist of cool water on my salty hot skin. The lights turned green and they were off. Thank you skater-male-with-spray-bottle-in-hand, it was probably nothing to you, but to me, it was a RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS in the...

I Don’t Set Goals I Set ‘This–Is-What-I Choose-To-Bring-Into-My-Life’ This morning I spent time in one of my favorite places. The beach. It was a time to reflect on the previous year and the year to come. New Year’s Eve is not a time for me to set goals. It is a time for me to ‘Choose-To-Bring-Into-My-Life’. It is not a time of gratuitous partying. It is a time for reflection ...  REFLECTION  ... on the events of the year as it begins to fade ... on the ensuing year as the first rays shine upon sweet days ... S SWEET DAYS S. Where life is blessed and my gratitude steps ahead of me in each new day, gratitude for everything ... EVERYTHING. REFLECTION And so I sat in my rock-chair with the ocean-view and reflected: REFLECTION on: events that may - or may not have - evoked sorrow, for they always...

My characters and their hoofing styles Second to dialogue, creating the characters is a fave part of my writing processes. When I write I visualise my characters and form a pretty good image of what they look like; their facial features, height, body size and shape, colour of eyes and hair, what they wear, how their face expresses emotions, their unique behavioural habits – and it all has to match their dialogue and name. And this has to... HAS TO ... match the way they walk. The characters in my current book are fairly well defined – except their walk. So, I set myself up at a café and watched a world of emotions go by in the passerbyers strides. My first subject was a male in his early 40s. He walked legs slightly bandied, arms buffed out to the side as if to hold a barrel under each. He...

Committment { c.1390, from L. committere “to bring together,” from com- “together, in combination or union’” + mittere “to put,” “to send or let go.”} ~~~ Commitment to self opens the pathway to freedom. Once one is committed all hesitancy ceases – resistance is obsolete and one can push further into their destiny towards who they are – where they are going – what they want – in freedom. ~~~ Let’s dispel a few myths – commitment is not about giving something up, being forced into something, losing personal freedom, an obligation or duty, a noose around the neck, a ball and chain … or something we have to do. Together in union we morally and emotionally engage - that is commitment. Commitment is about union, a joining together of an equitable nature. It is about bringing together agreements, which we choose to honour through duty and obligation. And we do so through...

A wonderful recommendation: “Deborah K Bates – a ‘bright light’ As a much sought-after motivational speaker, Life Coach and mentor, she has inspired countless people to realize their dreams. One of Australia’s ‘brightest lights,’ Deborah has made her literary mark in the international market with her non-fiction book published in 2012, which has just been reprinted, Your Personal Tuning Fork. She is currently working on an exciting novel – The Aquarius Odyssey that takes her from New South Wales to Far North Queensland in research as she follows her lively characters trail. On her recent visit to the Cairns region, Deborah engaged in a book signing, a poetry session at the Cairns Libraries Conversation Café, 2 media releases and a morning show radio talk. After reading some collections of her poetry, I can only say that her work is brilliant, thought- provoking and flashes of genius. I look forward to...

I was the recipient of a RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS today. Upon my usual walk down town and along the beach I decided to stop in a grab a protein bar. My usual practice on these walks is to take a small coin purse with limited money, my phone and house keys. I must have needed that protein bar as I miscalculated the amount payable and handed my $5 note to the cashier to which she promptly replied, "That will be $5.05 today." Me saying: "I am sorry I only have $5 on me at the moment, I will put it back." (Me thinking, I come in here at least 4 times a week, they know me, surely I am good to owe .05 cents) To which the cashier simply smiled and nodded. The woman next to me in the queue piped up with a, "I have .05 cents," and handed...

The 3 of us
[Mouseover for another image - Manager Matt, me (Deborah) and Wayne the Head Gardener.] Cape Trib Beach House (see my review on trip advisor) epitomizes all-things aligned to retreat-escape. From the moment the small tour bus took the white-dusty road upwards passing a general store and a number of other accommodation venues, I knew we were headed to somewhere that was going to offer enough isolation to enable a recharge and a much sought after commune with self and nature. First things first – once you leave the ‘mainland’ and head across the Daintree River on the ferry, you HAVE left the ‘mainland’ - into the land of solitude and magical beauty (sorry for the cliché), where the mobile phone ringtone would be nothing more than a rude intrusion. (Trust me, after the initial panic of an OMG-no-mobile-what-the-heck moment which lasted for about 30 seconds, it turned into an OMG-no-mobile-halleluiah...

rumi quote
"Out beyond ideas of wrong-doing and right-doing, there is a field. I'll meet you there. When the soul lies down in that grass, the world is too full to talk about. Ideas, language, even the phrase 'each other' doesn't make any sense." – Rumi I have a penchant for quotes by Rumi and this one is no exception. A master of words, Rumi strings words together into poetic revelations which embrace metaphor and elevates our thoughts beyond the prosaic to the heights of higher consciousness. "Meet me in the field¬and let our weary achy-ness take restupon the petals-the blades of grass;and as we stare out towards the heavens ... clouds shifting-our consciousness will merge beyond that of the limitedand peace will permeate the life-drenched spacesand we will be as onein the fieldbeyond right and wrongbeyond ideas and languagebeyond you ... beyond me-meet me in the field."DKBates...

ghee-11
Ghee - My Golden One In the past year I have taken to ghee like a duck to water (cliché intended) and clichés aside, I am the biggest fan of this humble product that has been used for around 5000 years. I use ghee as a food for health, for cooking, I spread it on my home-made low-carb, wheat-gluten-free, flax bread and mix it in my coffee. What is ghee - a type of clarified butter originating from India and used in Indian Ayurvedic cooking. The main difference between ghee and the clarified butter your Nan made is in the production process. Clarified butter is complete once water has been evaporated and fat separated from the milk solids. Ghee, on the other-hand, involves simmering the butter along with the milk solids to the point of burning/caramelising which gives ghee its aromatic and nutty taster. The Golden One Ghee is a superior...

When Food Healed My Body - after listening to my inner-advisor instead of my cravings  “My inner advisor is dying to heal me.” ~ Astrid Alauda ~ After a recent bout of the flu, which left me debilitated for 2 weeks, my body went into rave-mode demanding a detox. Too ill to argue, I acquiesced and shaved back on all foods except **my-detox-vege-soup made primarily with cabbage, and snacks consisting of super-food fruits such as berries, kiwi fruit, paw paw and a small amount of bananas. Prior to falling prey to the dreaded lurgi, I had already cut down on a number of foods that acted more like poisons to my body than medicines, (thanks to the ‘eat right for your body type’ method – and NO I am not hear to sprout about that, it’s purely reference material) but over time I had (she says a little sheepishly) snuck a few baddies...

My prayers have been answered – or something like that Finally a low-carb-high-protein-bread that doesn’t taste like cardboard! I like to keep low carb, I like to eat well and I love bread! I have played with numerous recipes in the hope of creating a low carb high protein bread and failed miserably way too often. Now I can have the best of both worlds thanks to the Herman Bot Bread which has a carbohydrate level of just 5%. For the non-red-meat-eaters, it is a great way to boost up on the 26% protein which healthily compares well with red meat at 30%.  The bread gives other breads a run for their money with their low GI factor with a certified Glycaemic Index of 24. This means it is supposed to assist in reducing appetite, weight loss, improving lipid profile, and significantly improving blood glucose control in people with diabetes –...

COUP FOR THE DAY: Rescued my laptop portable mouse from death. Mouse diagnosis – corroded battery terminals. Thank you Ram Dass, you led me to ponder and I thought to myself: 'What if I was a tree, how would I treat me? I would love me, nourish me with water, I would appreciate me, I would not compare me to other trees, I would see how unique I was, I would not judge me - for why would I have need to judge? I would spend time in nature, simply sitting (standing of course as I am a tree :-) ) I would give shelter to those in need ’neath or within my protective limbs, I would grow tall towards the light, I would bend with the seasons, I would allow myself to simply be without having to be what other 'trees' wanted me to be. I would be me.' I guess it's time for me to be as a tree....

Exfoliant
My Two Ingredient Exfoliate Some months back I made the health-promoting decision to eliminate processed foods from my eating regime, the benefits of which are endless (and that’s another blog). Before long, I looked into ways that I could change what I used in home and on my body. And so began the journey of supporting what I consumed by eliminating (where possible) products I used in home, especially that which I applied to my body. I love beauty treatments and I almost have a fetish for moisturisers as I love the feel of smooth skin, hence my exploration into home-made natural beauty products. Bi-carb soda and coconut oil have numerous uses in my home, and this includes being the ingredients in my home-made all natural two ingredient skin exfoliate. My home-made two ingredient skin exfoliate has too many pluses to ignore: Costs next to nothing Takes seconds to make...

What I do want to share is my homemade turmeric drink recipe which I love as a powerful natural health elixir. I drink it as a hot tea daily (twice daily when feeling behind the eight-ball) to keep my physical system at the top of its game. I crave your mouth, your voice, your hair. Silent and starving, I prowl through the streets. Bread does not nourish me, dawn disrupts me, all day I hunt for the liquid measure of your steps. I hunger for your sleek laugh, your hands the color of a savage harvest, hunger for the pale stones of your fingernails, I want to eat your skin like a whole almond. I want to eat the sunbeam flaring in your lovely body, The sovereign nose of your arrogant face, I want to eat the fleeting shade of your lashes, and I pace around hungry, sniffing the twilight, hunting for you, for your hot heart, like a puma in the barrens of Quitratue.  The Question of Too Much or Too Little Sleep Some people are night owls, others are early birds; some people say they need 8 - 10 hours’ sleep a night and others say they can run on 4 - 6 hours’ sleep. And of course there are the extenuating sleep circumstances where people suffer sleep deprivation through shift-work, babies, insomnia, illness, snoring partners etc. My Nan always said, ‘the more hours sleep you had before midnight the better you will feel.’ Another childhood influence said, ‘sleeping too late in the morning or past 8am would have you running tired all day.’ Both theories may well fall into the category of old wives tales but it does beg the questions - what is too much or too little sleep? Is there an optimum sleep time / quantity? How much sleep do we need? Are we getting enough or too much? What is...

My Tea of the Moment - Red Raspberry Leaf Tea Not Just a Pregnancy Tea - an Everyone Tea! My tea of the moment is the red raspberry leaf tea. The Holy Trinity of Energy Flow and the Principles of Nature The principles of nature are alive and form part of the continual exchange of all matter in the universe. And like all principles, they are simply waiting to be acknowledged and represent the holy trinity of energy flow as the: Principle of nature known as Chi - manifesting through the energy flow of exchange and breath Principle of nature known as Yin Yang - manifesting through the energy flow of equilibrium  and balance Principle of nature known as the Five Elements - manifesting through the energy flow of expression and transformation Energy flow is integral to the life force of all matter ..."   Life and all its forms are in a state of flux, ever pulsating as a dichotomous interplay of change and order through the Yin and Yang polarities – bringing to it the flow of balance and equilibrium. Glands
The Body’s Master Glands - Hypothalamus /Pituitary / Pineal  for ageing, weight, higher consciousness and more ... Did you know the 3 upper level glands work harmoniously to assist hunger, thirst, weight, sleep patterns, ageing, sex drive, moods and higher states of consciousness? The subject of hormones often times elicits notions of women and moods. Yet this is far from the truth. Yes, both male and female bodies have an endocrine system and produce hormones and there are 9 main gland centres. Little thought is given to the upper 3, the hypothalamus, pituitary, pineal, yet these 3 glands and their hormones perform master functions in regulating the other gland systems and are linked to our higher capabilities. Hypothalamus (pronounced: hi-po-tha-luh-mus) - its primary function is to regulate homeostasis. Not considered by some as a true endocrine gland, the hypothalamus has a significant role to play. Situated in the brain beneath the...

[“Life has the answers and as a being of life so too we have the answers …”]   An oriental fable tells of the ancient Gods trying to decide where to hide the power of the universe so that humans would not find it and use it destructively. ‘One God said, “Let’s hide it on top of the highest mountain.” But they decided that humans would eventually climb the highest mountain and find the great power. Another God said, “Let’s hide the great power at the bottom of the deepest ocean.” Again it was decided that humans would eventually explore the depths of the sea. The third God suggested, “Let us hide the great power of the universe in the middle of the earth.” But alas, they realized that humans would someday conquer that too. Finally the wisest God of all said, “I know what to do. Let us hide the...

The Magic Pulse Test for Allergies Here is a simple test that you can do anytime, anywhere to monitor food allergies. When we consume something that creates an allergic reaction there is a dramatic increase in the heartbeat. 20 beats a minute above normal Pulse Rate is considered stable in an unaffected digestive process (or normal physical activities or stress.) First step is to determine your ‘normal’ beat – as soon as you wake in the morning and using a watch with a second hand, count the number of beats in a 60 second period. (A normal pulse reading is 50-70 beats per minute and this can vary according to age and health or physical condition.) Once you have ‘your’ pulse beat, take your pulse after consuming any foods or drinks that you may suspect an allergy too. Wait 15-20 minutes and re-check. If the pulse rate has increased by...

Food cravings and imbalances in the body's systems Food cravings are a symptom of imbalance in the body’s homeostasis. In my book Your Personal Tuning Fork the Endocrine System ... a way to sustainable health, I discuss the role of homeostasis in relation to the body’s systems such as the endocrine glands. For most of us, we cast little thought to our bodies, perhaps only thinking about it when illness or disturbance strikes. Disturbances such as allergies, brain fatigue, dizziness, general aches and pains, headaches, insomnia, lethargy, loss of libido, low self-esteem, mood swings, sugar /salt / carbohydrate cravings, and weight issues interfere with daily life interrupting sustainable health. What do food cravings say about your endocrine system? Sugar/salt/carbohydrate cravings can be a symptom of an imbalance in one of the endocrine glands for example: Pineal Gland The pineal gland produces serotonin and melatonin and an imbalance in these levels...

Apple Cider Vinegar Magic The benefits of organic apple cider vinegar has been around for ages, and at the risk of hashing away at a topic that has been done over and over, I run that risk to extoll the many virtues of this natural, economical, easy to get and readily available substance.  First port of call is to reiterate that it is optimum to use the organic variety made by fermenting pressed apple juice until the sugars turn to vinegar. The ‘organic’ bit is vital to keep the ‘mother’ intact. How does one know if their product has a ‘mother’ attached? You will recognise the ‘mother’ in apple cider vinegar by cloudy strings visible in the bottom of the bottle. And therein is the ‘miracle’! This culture brims with beneficial enzymes, pectin, vitamins, mineral salts, amino acids, and trace minerals.  An Apple a Day  It is the acetic acid...

We have the ability to live longer today – to live longer and healthier. “Health is a large word. It embraces not only the body, but the mind and spirit as well.” Health’s primary goal is to restore harmonious function so that every part of the whole is doing its work and is in open communication with every other part. Holistic applications are not about fighting disease – rather it is about restoring harmony – and within this environment disease cannot be tolerated. Well-being is dependent upon all of our processes working at optimal levels. That is holistically. Get the hard bits out of the way first (pretty much a principle for anything on our life-necessary list i.e. clean the floors then bake the cake.) Put the ‘not-my-fave-thing-to-do’ on the top of the to-do-list and that is the NO Exceptions one out of the way. 2. Break-up with your ‘friends’ procrastination and doubt ...  they weren’t your friends anyway. Then break-down your goal, dream, aspiration, or change-state, into smaller steps – that is little goals and these little goals are the little feet that take you to your dream, they keep you moving forward AND they get you Started Immediately! 3. Now, that is – immediately - set a completion date - a finishing-line - and visualise yourself reaching the line and breaking through the ribbon with arms raised, crowds applauding and a huge winner’s smile on your face ... after all you are doing it Flamboyantly!...

A stupa is the most sacred monument found in all of the ancient Buddhist countries. Unique amongst all forms of sacred architecture, it is the quintessential symbol of enlightenment. Stupas are filled with sacred images, mantras and the relics of holy beings. The foundation, symmetry, orientation and contents of the stupa create incredible power to those who even look upon it. It has the potential to transcend the limitations of language to activate enlightened knowledge. ...

Melodies of Hope My body blends with the earth: Undulations of creation tell their story through the aged crevices of the land. Rivers of belief … Torrents of heresy flow like lava through the watery inlets - Time to make a stand   My soul swims with the oceans: Raging rivers of fear and despised creatures lament their tale of torture and neglect. Mountains of virtue … Reach to the sky like explosions of ecstasy caught in the ripple of time - Man cannot reject   My spirit weeps with the heavens: Entreaties of redemption ricochet, abandoned by deaf ears and sightless minds. Melodies of hope … Floating particles send messages to relinquish debt upon the soul - signals a re-awakening of mankind   Holistic thought creates life: New beginnings entice the threadlike existence of man and beast – earth and sky. Reflections of unity … Freedom from the...

No More Bathroom Trips through the Night Is this your story? You fall into bed at night ready for a beautiful night’s sleep. You have looked forward to lying down for hours. But your bladder has different plans! Your plans of a great night’s sleep fails miserably against the plans of your bladder and sleep is interrupted by as much as 4-5 times a night.   So here is the deal … Gravity holds water in the lower part of your body when you are upright. That can be due to standing on ones feet OR sitting for hours on end. The legs may ache or swell and lying down or sleep is the only thing that brings relief. When you eventually do get to lie down, the lower body – that is from the hips down and includes legs, ankles and feet falls level with the kidneys. It...

pulse

A Child'S Song ~ by Sobonfu Some  There is a tribe in Africa where the birth date of a child is counted not from when they were born, nor from when they are conceived but from the day that the child was a thought in its mother’s mind. And when a woman decides that she will have a child, she goes off and sits under a tree, by herself, and she listens until she can hear the song of the child that wants to come. And after she’s heard the song of this child, she comes back to the man who will be the child’s father, and teaches it to him. And then, when they make love to physically conceive the child, some of that time they sing the song of the child, as a way to invite it. And then, when the mother is pregnant, the mother teaches...

large body
An excerpt fromYour Personal Tuning Fork the Endocrine System    It has been said that 70% of disease is as a result of emotional repression. The emotions have been linked to the physical body for centuries. Chinese medicine drew correlations between the physical energies of the organs and the emotions centuries ago and they have a sophisticated holistic system of healthcare using the meridians. Today we are educated with a greater acceptance and awareness between the physical body and the emotions – hate poisons the cells and manifests as skin conditions, cancers and acne; grief engulfs our lungs and suffocates our breathing; fear paralyses and crystallizes fluids into gall stones or kidney stones; anger and rage boils the blood and sends toxins into the liver and gall-bladder; anxiety churns the stomach and congests the flow of elimination; regret and sorrow strip the cells of the spleen and pancreas, depleting the sweetness...

give recieve
When we give and receive equally … as a fair and equitable exchange - we create balance and equilibrium flows – it is a law of physics and a principle of nature.  Giving and receiving equitably equates to fulfillment for all and when we have the goal of fulfillment for all, we are operating from the principle of balance and equilibrium and by virtue of, this creates the perfect marriage of humanness which resonates far out into the cosmos and boomerangs right back into our own ‘backyard’. IS there a greater act of love? It is not about giving to receive i.e. I will do/give/be this (which is to give) so they will like/give/have me (which is to receive) … It is about giving to give and receiving to receive. When we give to give and receive to receive we generate a natural flow which has the power to...

Testimonials from happy readers  "I have finished Deborah's book - Your personal tuning fork - The Endocrine system. I was very impressed with the holistic approach that Deborah applied to the writing of her book, she is obviously very knowledgeable and passionate about this topic and I am sure a very effective healer to many people. I guess she has also spent quite a bit of time talking to you about the health of all the systems in the body but in particular the Endocrine system as each gland plays such an important role in various hormone productions but how they also rely on each other for healthy function. For my own reference I have created a one page chart to help me boost all of the 8/9 endocrine glands as Deborah states that results can be noticed very quickly when we start to introduce the "Herbs and foods for a...

coyote-at-dawn-300x194
I remember a hundred lovely lakes, and recall the fragrant breath of pine and fir and cedar and poplar trees. The trail has strung upon it, as upon a thread of silk, opalescent dawns and saffron sunsets. It has given me blessed release from care and worry and the troubled thinking of our modern day. It has been a return to the primitive and the peaceful. Whenever the pressure of our complex city life thins my blood and benumbs my brain, I seek relief in the trail; and when I hear the coyote wailing to the yellow dawn, my cares fall from me - I am happy.  ~Hamlin Garland, McClure's, February 1899...

The Mysterious Pineal Gland (First published in Australian Natural Health magazine)  When the pineal is stimulated and functioning optimally, it helps us to sleep and relax, improves the immune system, evokes a natural state of euphoria and higher states of intellect, and helps alleviate depression and the ageing process. The size of a pea, the pineal gland lies immediately beneath the hypothalamus in a tiny cave at the centre of the brain. As the last endocrine gland discovered, it was once shrouded in myth, superstition and metaphysical theories. However, as life coach and applied kinesiologist Deborah K Bates explains, the pineal gland holds the key to sustainable health, mood, energy and self-esteem. A supernatural gland Philosophers and spiritual adepts have long contemplated the function of the pineal. The ancient Greeks believed it was our connection to the Realms of Thought, while French philosopher Renee Descartes referred to it as “the seat of the human...

ART FOR HEALING (First published in Australian Natural Health magazine) Creativity isn’t just for artists and musicians, it’s also a healthy way to express the way we feel, heal, get in touch with our inner self, and cope with illness and trauma. As Life Coach and applied Kinesiologist Deborah K Bates discovers, many people have uncovered a tremendous sense of healing and personal transformation through the creative processes of Art Therapy. Deborah chats with two professionals, Gold Coast artist/teacher, Shelena Russell and Northern Rivers, Community Artist/mentor, David Adams. While both work in different areas of art – David in community art with clients facing multiple life barriers and Shelena an artist and art teacher with her own gallery – they share a common philosophy regarding Art Therapy, that it’s a transformative process whereby we can unblock and unlock our past. It’s about freeing our future from the past – it’s about helping us becoming emotionally...
